Taking Your Dog to Belize
Current entry requirements, permit steps, estimated costs, and a practical checklist for U.S. travelers bringing dogs to Belize.
Requirements for Bringing Your Dog to Belize
ISO Microchip
Belize's published pet import requirements do not specifically state an ISO 11784/11785 microchip requirement for dogs. If your dog will return to the United States, however, CDC requires all dogs entering the U.S. to be microchipped.
Before return travel to the United StatesRabies Vaccination
Dogs under 4 months old may enter without a rabies vaccination, but they will be held in home quarantine in Belize until 30 days after rabies vaccination can be administered by a registered veterinarian. For dogs old enough to be vaccinated, proof of rabies vaccination should travel with the dog as part of the supporting documents for entry.
Have current proof of rabies vaccination before travel; under-4-month-old dogs are quarantined until 30 days after vaccination can be givenRabies Titer Test
Belize's official pet import procedure and USDA APHIS Belize pet travel page do not list a rabies antibody titer test for pet dogs entering from the United States.
Health Certificate
Your dog must travel with a veterinary health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. USDA APHIS states that pet dog and cat certificates for Belize do not require APHIS endorsement.
Obtain before departure; carry the original certificate with the dogImport Permit
All dogs exported from the United States to Belize require an import permit from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA). BAHA states the permit is valid for 90 days, single-use, and has a processing fee of BZ$50 (about US$25).
Apply before travel; permit is valid for 90 days and can be used onceParasite Treatment
Belize strongly recommends pets be treated against endoparasites and ectoparasites within 30 days of exportation.
Within 30 days before exportArrival Notification and Inspection
The importer must notify BAHA of the date, time, and flight number 2 days before the pet arrives so a veterinary officer is present. All pet animals entering Belize are inspected by a BAHA official at entry.
Notify BAHA 2 days before arrivalTransport Crate Sanitation
The transport cage must be new or cleaned and disinfected before use for exportation of the pet.
Before departureQuarantine Period
Routine quarantine is not listed for compliant adult dogs. Dogs under 4 months old have rabies vaccination waived for entry but are held in home quarantine in Belize until 30 days after rabies vaccination can be administered. If an importer presents an import permit but no supporting documents, Belize regulations allow entry on condition of house quarantine plus an administrative fine.
Applies only in specific cases such as underage dogs or missing supporting documentsBanned Breeds
No official Belize government source reviewed here listed banned dog breeds for pet importation. Airline breed restrictions may still apply, especially for snub-nosed dogs on some carriers.

Returning to the US with Your Dog
As of March 25, 2026, dogs returning to the United States must meet current CDC dog import rules. All dogs entering the U.S. must appear healthy, be at least 6 months old, have a microchip, and be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. For dogs that have been only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries during the 6 months before U.S. entry, CDC says the Dog Import Form receipt is the main document required in addition to those general conditions. If your dog has been in any CDC-listed high-risk rabies country during the previous 6 months, additional rabies vaccination and certification rules apply. Travelers should complete the CDC Dog Import Form before arrival and verify whether any USDA or state-level rules also apply at their U.S. destination.
