Taking Your Dog to Barbados

Use this 2026 checklist to prepare your dog for Barbados entry, including the import permit, rabies timing, parasite treatment, health certificate, and return-to-U.S. steps.

Requirements for Bringing Your Dog to Barbados

Required

ISO Microchip

Your dog must be permanently identified with a microchip before or at the time of rabies vaccination. The microchip number must match the number on the health certificate and supporting records. Barbados requires the certifying veterinarian to verify the microchip before signing the certificate.

Must be implanted before or at the time of rabies vaccination
Required

Import Permit

An import permit is required for all dogs entering Barbados. The permit must be obtained from the Veterinary Services Department before travel and is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

Obtain before booking final travel; permit valid for 6 months
Required

Rabies Vaccination

Dogs must be vaccinated with an inactivated rabies vaccine that complies with WOAH/OIE guidance. The dog must be at least 3 months old at vaccination. Boosters must be given on or before the previous vaccine expires. Barbados requires a 35-day wait after a primary rabies vaccination or after a late/expired booster before entry. If the manufacturer requires a multi-dose primary course, the 35 days runs from the final dose.

At least 35 days before entry after primary vaccination or expired/missed booster
Recommended

Rabies Titer Test

Not required for dogs traveling from the United States if the dog has been in the U.S. or other Barbados Category 1 countries for at least the previous 3 months. A FAVN rabies antibody test at an approved laboratory is required only if the dog has been in a Category 2 country within the 3 months before travel or if arriving by sea. The sample must be taken at least 30 days after rabies vaccination and show at least 0.5 IU/ml.

Only if applicable; blood draw at least 30 days after rabies vaccination
Required

Heartworm Test

Dogs over 6 months old must test negative for heartworm disease before travel. Barbados accepts ELISA antigen testing such as IDEXX SNAP; if positive or previously treated, a modified Knott’s test may be used to show absence of microfilaraemia.

Within 30 days before departure
Required

Parasite Treatment

Dogs must be treated for ticks and tapeworms within 7 days before leaving the United States. The tapeworm treatment must contain praziquantel.

Within 7 days before departure
Required

Health Certificate

All dogs must travel with an Official Export Health Certificate endorsed by the official veterinary authority of the country of origin. From the U.S., this means a USDA-endorsed export health certificate. The dog must be examined within 7 days of travel, and the endorsed certificate is valid for 10 days from endorsement for air travel.

Exam within 7 days of travel; certificate valid 10 days from endorsement
Required

Residency Requirement

Dogs traveling from Category 1 countries, including the United States, must show they have spent at least 3 continuous months in the country of export or other Category 1 countries immediately before entry.

Must be satisfied during the 3 months immediately before entry
Required

Arrival Notice

You must give Barbados Veterinary Services at least 3 working days’ notice of the expected arrival date and time. Failure to do so can delay release of your dog.

At least 3 working days before arrival
Required

Customs Clearance

Pets must clear customs and veterinary checks on arrival. Barbados states that you will need a customs broker to facilitate customs clearance, and live animals entering Barbados are treated as cargo.

On arrival
Recommended

Quarantine Period

There is no routine post-arrival quarantine stated for dogs that meet Barbados entry conditions. Dogs that do not satisfy the import conditions may be refused entry, detained, destroyed, or otherwise disposed of under Barbados regulations.

No standard quarantine if fully compliant
Recommended

Banned Breeds

No official Barbados government breed ban was identified in the reviewed import guidance. Airline breed restrictions may still apply, especially for brachycephalic dogs or cargo acceptance rules, so confirm with your carrier before booking.

Check airline rules before reserving flights

Returning to the US with Your Dog

As of March 25, 2026, every dog entering or returning to the United States must have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. For dogs that have been only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries during the 6 months before U.S. entry, the CDC says this receipt is the only form needed, but the dog must still appear healthy, be at least 6 months old, and have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner. If your dog has been in any CDC high-risk rabies country during the previous 6 months, additional documentation and port-of-entry rules apply. Complete the CDC Dog Import Form before travel and keep the receipt available digitally or in print for airline and border checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an import permit to bring my dog to Barbados?

Yes. Barbados requires an import permit for all animal importations, including dogs. The permit must be obtained from the Veterinary Services Department before travel and is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

How long after a rabies shot can my dog enter Barbados?

Barbados requires a 35-day wait after a primary rabies vaccination. The same 35-day wait also applies after a revaccination if the previous booster had expired or was missed. If the vaccine maker requires more than one dose for the primary course, the 35 days runs from the final dose.

Is a rabies titer test required for dogs going from the U.S. to Barbados?

Usually no, not if your dog has been in the United States or other Barbados Category 1 countries for the 3 months immediately before entry. A FAVN rabies antibody test is required if your dog has been in a Category 2 country during the previous 3 months or if the dog is arriving by sea.

What parasite treatment does Barbados require?

Dogs must be treated for ticks and tapeworms within 7 days before leaving the United States. The tapeworm treatment must contain praziquantel.

Does Barbados require a health certificate?

Yes. Your dog must travel with an Official Export Health Certificate endorsed by the official veterinary authority in the country of origin. From the U.S., that means a USDA-endorsed export health certificate. The exam must be done within 7 days of travel, and the endorsed certificate is valid for 10 days.

Does my dog need a heartworm test for Barbados?

Yes, if your dog is over 6 months old. Barbados requires a heartworm test within 30 days before departure.

Is there quarantine for dogs arriving in Barbados?

Barbados does not state a routine quarantine period for compliant pet dogs meeting all import conditions. However, animals that arrive in contravention of the rules may be refused entry or detained.

What do I need to return to the U.S. from Barbados with my dog?

You need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt for each dog. If your dog has been only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries during the last 6 months, that is generally the only CDC document needed, but the dog must also be healthy on arrival, at least 6 months old, and microchipped.
