Dogs at Wind Cave National Park
Know where leashed dogs are allowed at Wind Cave, which trails are pet friendly, and what to expect before you go.
Wind Cave National Park Dog Policy
Wind Cave National Park allows dogs in limited front-country areas only. Pets are welcome in the visitor center area, Elk Mountain Campground, parking areas, established roads open to public vehicles, and on the Prairie Vista Trail and Elk Mountain Campground Trail.
Wind Cave is one of the more restrictive national parks for dogs because pets are not permitted in the backcountry or on most trails. The park specifically notes hazards for dogs on allowed trails, including poison ivy, rattlesnakes, and ticks, and reminds visitors to keep distance from wildlife such as bison and elk.

Plan your dog’s day around the park’s limited pet access. At Wind Cave, dogs are only allowed in the visitor center area, parking areas, established public roads, Elk Mountain Campground, Prairie Vista Trail, and Elk Mountain Campground Trail. Bring a standard leash no longer than 6 feet, plus waste bags and extra water, because the park notes there is no drinking water on these pet-friendly trails. Summer heat can build quickly in the southern Black Hills, so avoid midday walks and never leave your dog in the car. Watch carefully for bison, elk, prairie dogs, and other wildlife, and give all animals plenty of space. The park also warns of ticks, poison ivy, and prairie rattlesnakes on pet-friendly trails, so check paws and fur after hikes. If you want to tour the cave, arrange pet care in advance because pets are not allowed on cave tours or in public buildings such as the visitor center.
