Dogs at Carlsbad Caverns National Park

What to know about pets at Carlsbad Caverns, including leash rules, restricted areas, kennel access, fees, and the few dog-friendly areas in the park.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park Dog Policy

Carlsbad Caverns is not a very dog-friendly national park. Pets are barred from the cavern, visitor center, unpaved surface trails, off-road areas, and the Bat Flight Program. Dogs are generally limited to developed areas plus a small number of paved or picnic-area locations.

Leash Required Yes, dogs must be leashed in pet-allowed areas; NPS states pets must be on a leash at all times where permitted.
Dogs on Trails Very limited - pets are not allowed on unpaved surface trails or in the backcountry; the paved section of the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail allows pets on leash.
Dogs in Campgrounds No developed campground in the park. Only backcountry camping is permitted, and pets are not permitted on park trails or in the backcountry.
Restricted Areas Cavern, visitor center, unpaved surface trails, off-road areas, backcountry, and the Bat Flight Program area.
Entrance Fee $15 per person age 16+ for cavern entry, plus a $1 timed-entry reservation for Carlsbad Cavern.
Kennel Available Yes, a kennel for pets is available for a fee at the visitor center.
Pets Left in Vehicles Not allowed - pets may not be left unattended in a vehicle.
Picnic Areas Yes - leashed pets are allowed at Rattlesnake Springs Picnic Area.

If you are traveling with a dog, plan on using the visitor center kennel if you want to tour the cavern. For above-ground time with your dog, stick to pet-allowed developed areas such as paved roads, pullouts, parking and picnic areas, the paved portion of the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail, and Rattlesnake Springs. Because the park is hot, dry, and wildlife-rich, bring extra water, avoid midday heat, and keep your dog close.

Tips for Visiting Carlsbad Caverns National Park with Your Dog

Carlsbad Caverns is a challenging park for dog owners because pet access is tightly restricted. If you want to tour the cavern, plan ahead to use the kennel at the visitor center and do not leave your dog unattended in the car. For outdoor time together, focus on the paved section of the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail, developed paved areas near the visitor center, Walnut Canyon Overlook, and Rattlesnake Springs. Bring more water than you think you need: the park warns that there is no reliable water source in the backcountry and desert conditions can be extreme. Try to avoid walking your dog between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when heat and direct sun are strongest. Watch for wildlife, including snakes and other desert animals, and keep at least a respectful distance from wildlife. Surfaces can be hot, shade is limited, and cell service may be unreliable, so keep walks short and conservative. If your dog is sensitive to heat, this is a park where early morning and cooler-season visits are the safest choice.
