Taking Your Dog to the United Kingdom

Use this 2026 checklist for Great Britain entry rules, documents, cargo travel, costs, and U.S. return requirements.

Requirements for Bringing Your Dog to United Kingdom

Required

ISO Microchip

Your dog must be individually identified with an ISO-compliant microchip meeting ISO 11784/11785 standards. ISO-compliant microchips are typically 15 digits long. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination used for travel validity.

Must be implanted before the rabies vaccine used for entry.
Required

Rabies Vaccination

Dogs entering Great Britain from the United States must be vaccinated against rabies after microchipping. Travel is allowed only after the vaccine’s immunity period has passed, which is at least 21 full days after the first vaccination or first valid vaccination after microchipping. For UK entry, the first rabies vaccination after microchip implantation is treated as the primary vaccine and is valid for 1 year; boosters must remain current with no lapse.

At least 21 full days after the primary rabies vaccination before travel.
Recommended

Rabies Titer Test

Not required for dogs traveling from the United States because the U.S. is treated as a listed non-EU country for Great Britain pet travel purposes. Rabies blood tests are required only for dogs traveling from non-listed countries.

Only needed if traveling from a non-listed country; then blood draw must be at least 30 days after rabies vaccination and travel must be at least 3 months after the blood sample date.
Required

Health Certificate

For travel from the United States, dogs need the appropriate Great Britain pet health certificate completed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and endorsed by USDA APHIS. For non-commercial movement, the certificate is valid for 30 days after the veterinarian signs it, but APHIS endorsement must occur within 10 days of arrival in the UK. The owner declaration must also accompany the dog.

Vet certificate before travel; APHIS endorsement within 10 days of arrival in Great Britain for non-commercial entry.
Recommended

Import Permit

No standard pet import permit is required for a privately owned dog entering Great Britain under the Pet Travel Scheme if all pet travel rules are met. Extra commercial import rules apply if the dog is being sold, rehomed, transferred, arrives more than 5 days before or after the owner, or if more than 5 pets travel without a qualifying event exemption.

Not required for standard non-commercial pet travel.
Required

Parasite Treatment

Dogs must receive tapeworm treatment from a veterinarian before entering Great Britain unless arriving directly from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta, or Norway. The treatment must contain praziquantel or an equivalent proven effective against Echinococcus multilocularis, and the vet must record the product, manufacturer, date, time, stamp, and signature in the travel document.

No less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before arrival in Great Britain.
Recommended

Quarantine Period

There is no routine quarantine if your dog fully complies with Great Britain pet travel rules. If the rules are not met, the dog may be quarantined, returned to the country of departure, or refused entry; GOV.UK notes quarantine can be for up to 4 months and the owner is responsible for fees.

Applies only if entry rules are not met; quarantine can be up to 4 months.
Required

Banned Breeds

You cannot bring a banned type of dog into Great Britain unless it already has a valid Certificate of Exemption. GOV.UK lists Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and XL Bully as banned types.

Must be resolved before travel; banned dogs need a valid Certificate of Exemption before entry.
Required

Approved Route and Air Cargo

You must use an approved route and carrier to enter Great Britain. If traveling by plane, pets must travel as cargo unless you are flying on a chartered private plane or traveling with a guide or assistance dog.

Must be arranged before booking and departure.

Returning to the US with Your Dog

As of March 25, 2026, all dogs entering or returning to the United States must have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. Dogs must also appear healthy on arrival, be at least 6 months old, and be microchipped. For dogs that have been only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries during the 6 months before U.S. entry, the CDC Dog Import Form receipt is the only CDC document generally required. The United Kingdom is treated as a low-risk or rabies-free pathway for routine pet returns, so most travelers returning directly from the UK will use the CDC Dog Import Form plus their dog’s normal veterinary and travel records. If your dog has been in a high-risk rabies country within the previous 6 months, additional CDC documentation and airport restrictions can apply, so review your dog’s full 6-month travel history before booking return travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do dogs flying from the United States to Great Britain have to travel as cargo?

Usually yes. GOV.UK says pets traveling by plane to Great Britain must travel as cargo unless they are on a chartered private plane or are guide or assistance dogs.

How long do I have to wait after my dog’s rabies shot before entering Great Britain?

You must wait at least 21 full days after the first rabies vaccination, or the first valid rabies vaccination after microchipping, before entering Great Britain. Some vaccines have longer manufacturer immunity periods, so your vet should confirm the exact valid-from date.

Does my dog need a rabies titer test for the United Kingdom if we are flying from the U.S.?

No. A rabies blood test is not required for dogs entering Great Britain from the United States under standard pet travel rules. It is only required for dogs traveling from non-listed countries.

Is tapeworm treatment mandatory for dogs entering Great Britain?

Yes, for most dogs. A veterinarian must administer tapeworm treatment no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before arrival in Great Britain, unless the dog is arriving directly from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta, or Norway.

Do I need an import permit to bring my dog to Great Britain?

Not for normal non-commercial pet travel. If your dog is your personal pet and meets the Pet Travel Scheme rules, there is no standard import permit. Different commercial rules apply if the dog is being sold, rehomed, transferred, or traveling outside the owner’s 5-day window.

What happens if my dog’s paperwork is wrong when we arrive in Great Britain?

Your dog can be quarantined, returned to the country it traveled from, or refused entry. GOV.UK says quarantine can be for up to 4 months, and the owner must pay the fees and charges.

Are any dog breeds banned in Great Britain?

Yes. GOV.UK lists Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and XL Bully as banned types. You cannot bring one into Great Britain unless it already has a valid Certificate of Exemption.

What do I need to return to the United States with my dog from the UK?

For most personal pets returning directly from the UK, you need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, and your dog must be at least 6 months old, microchipped, and healthy on arrival. Extra CDC requirements apply if the dog has been in a high-risk rabies country within the previous 6 months.
